The attractivity of water features in public areas is well known. Using fiber optic lighting systems supports this attractivity on one hand, and reduces service costs on the other. Dynamic effects, arising by the movement of the water, are accentuated by illumination, even with changing colours. Especially in the darker seasons, water features designed this way submit a decent esthetical mood.

These pictures give a slight impression of the opportunities. The first two pictures present a water feature in Kevelaer, Germany, where an arragement of 8-m hight stela made of polished granite is surrounded by a 6 by 6-m square. Throughout this square, 56 fountains are spread strictly geometrically. These fountains are illuminated by a fiber optic lighting system, including a colour change. At night, the illuminated stela communicate the special mood of the place by this impressive, but all the same unobtrusive arrangement.

A different application is shown in the third picture. A large place in front of the foyer of a new railway station in Darmstadt, Germany, is optically aerated by 24 fountains with variable hights. These fountains are illuminated by a colour changing fiber optic lighting system, too. During winter times, when the fountains are closed, the translucent lids are illuminated from below. Thus, a very impressive, warm view across the place is realized in spite of the frosty ambience.

In each application, the optical cables are buried safe beneath the surfaces and the functional elements are placed together with the water control devices to permit easy service access.
